The Youth in Art Exhibition was held at the Raton Intermediate School and opened to the public Tuesday evening with sponsors of the show donating over $800 in prize money to be awarded to the Raton High Art Students.
Brenda Ferri was honored with judging the exhibit this year. She judged artwork in several different categories from painting to graphite or charcoal and pastels. Her pick for Best of Show went to Kira Medina’s Monet style “Nostalgic Childhood”.
Some of the students artwork was also featured in the Southwest Art Show held earlier this year.
Raton High Art Teacher Melissa Medina and Raton Intermediate School Art Teacher Phyllis Trujillo challenged students to be creative in some very different ways. One project Trujillo chose for students was to create color wheels using the different colors and mixing formulas to make the wheels. Medina told the audience at the awards ceremony that she started the kids out with charcoal to help them learn to draw. Many students chose to work in watercolor which Medina notes can be very difficult, noting that if you make a mistake you can’t take it back you have to live with it and incorporate it in the piece.
And a special Thank You to this years judge: Ms. Brenda Ferri ,exec. dir of the Raton Arts and Humanities Council and Raton Mainstreet
