Thomas Eugene Mata passed away peacefully in his home on June 8, 2026. He was born to Mary Alice Mata on August 15, 1955 and was a very proud resident of Mosquero, NM. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Alice Mata, his brothers Benny and Bernadino Mata, and his sister Della Rawdon.
Thomas, known to many as T.J., was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend. He was a very kind and giving person and went out of his way to offer help to many in his small community. He took great pride in his work ethic. He worked at the local iceplant, on dwelling rigs, worked with Stinebaugh Drilling, and later worked on a variety of ranches: Libby’s, Bell Ranch, Culbertson’s, and with Hartley Construction right up to his retirement. Upon retirement, he was often found outside his home enjoying his smokes, spirits, and lively conversations with lifelong friends whom he loved and treasured.
Thomas loved watching his western movies and loved listening to music. He was very well known for loving to dance. At the local dances, he could be seen kicking up his cowboy boots and twirling his partner. He lived a life that was full of stories, lessons on perseverance, and laughter. Many of these were brought to life while enjoying the many fishing trips alongside his mother and relatives.
We are not all blessed with the opportunity to say goodbye, but we had the immense blessing of being able to take him to casinos, dinners, host a special movie, and enjoy music and food to celebrate all he means to so many of us. His niece Patricia Archuleta, with such love and devotion to so many family members, was gracious enough to open up her home as we learned about his transition. He was cared for in his last moments by his sisters Carrie Archuleta, whom he referred to as “Mom,” his younger sister Rita Palos and his brothers-in-law Nick Archuleta (Pops) and Jose Palos. He was deeply grateful for the opportunity to be in his home and have the opportunity to meet with relatives and friends. He was able to share appreciation, love, and memories as he prepared to meet his Maker. As we look back upon our memories, phrases like “102 Baby,” “No Sugar-No Pie,” and “I’ll be there when I get there,” capture his love, humor, and carefree spirit, a spirit that will be deeply missed and certainly forever treasured.
Service is pending.
