Special to KRTN Multi-Media
April marks National Child Abuse Prevention month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and implementing strategies to support familes and prevent child maltreatment before it occurs.
In celebration of this important cause, the community is encouraged to wear blue and participate in the “Show Your Blue initiative. The national “Show your Blue ” day which took place on April 10 saw local residents and organizations coming together to show thier support.
Youth Heartline, in cooperation with Youth Empowerment services (YES program), led the charge with several community-wide inititives, including:
– Lighting of the star on goat hill blue
– Tying blue ribbons on light poles in downtown Raton
– Placing awareness signs through out the community
– Attending the city commission meeting to accept a proclamation in honor of National Child Abuse Awareness month.
– Showing a free family friendly movie for families and the community.
– Sharing blue pinwheels with local businesses and residents
The blue pinwheel is a symbol of hope and a reminder that every child deserves a safe and happy childhood. Youth Heartline and the YES program woild like to thank all the businesses and individuals for thier support in spreading awareness this month.
To wrap up the month of awareness, a special free movie night will be held at the Shuler Theater on April 30th. The event will feature door prizes for the attendees, concessions, and awards for the businesses and individuals who best “showed thier blue” throughout the initiative.
We invite everyone to join us for this fun, family friendly event as we close out a sucessful month of awareness.
