The Cimarron Rams (Overall 22-4) (District 10-0) hosted the 2026 District 5A championship game against the Springer Red Devils (Overall 19-11) (District 6-4) Saturday evening February 28, 2026, where the Rams took the early lead and other than a quick Springer point lead 7-6 in the first quarter held the lead the rest of the game for the district championship win.

Before the game began the two teams met at center court for a moment of silence to honor a former Red Devil team mate, Owen Burton, who tragically died in a ranching accident this last week. Condolences to the family.

Springer had a much longer road to the championship game as they battled the New Mexico School for the Deaf and won that game 83-57. Then they defeated Des Moines 68-35 and traveled to Mosquero for a game with the Blue where they won 58-48 to get the honor of playing in the district championship against Cimarron.

Cimarron began the game controlling the jump ball and went on to outscore the Red Devils by 11 in the first quarter of what became a face paced aggressive ball game. The play continued into the second quarter with Cimarron holding Springer at bay with strong defensive play and keeping the Red Devils from making the shots and forcing off balance shooting. At halftime the Rams held a 33-24 lead.

Xavier Armijo was responsible for most of the Springer scoring 14 of the 24 points in the first half of play. On the Cimarron side of the book Logan Sahd, Urijah Martinez and Henry Werhane made most of the 33 points.

Third quarter action brought more of the same aggressive play with both team’s defense preventing shots. The fourth quarter saw tempers get tested as the game became a bit more physical especially as the Rams began to pop the net a little more often and finished the game with a 17 point lead 70-53.
