Clayton High basketball teams travelled through the rain to Raton SaturdayFebruary 14, 2026 for a district matchup that brought some exciting basketball and one game saw a five on two few minutes of play and a win for Raton.
The JV girls took to the court about 20 minutes late Saturday afternoon as Clayton was late getting to Raton as a result of miscommunication in Clayton. The game started with a technical for delay of game which gave Raton a two point lead. As the game continued Clayton took the lead with Raton close behind with a 16-13 lead at halftime.
Third quarter action is where the fun began as Clayton had only six players. Two of those players could only play one quarter as they are also on the varsity team. At about the three minute mark in the 3rd quarter Clayton had three players left on the court. Rustlynn Mock and Apollo Mann along with M. Blan kept Raton at bay with Raton on top 24-23 after three quarters. Clayton took the lead 28-24. By the end of the fourth quarter Clayton had two players left on the court and had tied the score at 36. A one minute OT period finished out the game as Raton dropped in two for the 38-36 win. Raton struggled to find the basket, the girls just couldn’t get the ball to fall which was one of the big reasons Clayton kept it close and to the credit of the Clayton girls who played on and didn’t quit goes a pat on the back for their continued efforts.
The JV boys also had an exciting game again starting in the third quarter as the boys hit the halftime locker room with Clayton on top 29-21. At one point Raton was down by 11. Raton battled their way back to tie the game with just over six minutes left in the fourth. It was back and forth until Clayton took the lead with just over four minutes left. Raton stayed hot on the heels but just couldn’t get the ball to fall true and ended the game with a Clayton win 47-45.
The varsity girls took the court with Raton taking an early lead against the 7-0 Yellowjackettes and had a 6-0 lead when Clayton finally got warmed up and found the groove to take an 11-6 first quarter score. Halftime saw a 26-6 lead by Raton. Clayton’s strong defensive play again often swarming the ball held Raton to a single digit score to finish out the game 48-9.
As the varsity boys found the hardwood it was Raton that took an early lead. Clayton came to the game in fourth place in district six with a 3-4 district record while Raton was right behind Clayton with a 1-5 district record. Raton lead 14-13 after one but couldn’t hold the lead and went into halftime with a 28 tie game. Third quarter play saw Raton outscore Clayton 11-9. As Raton has done so many time this year they struggled to hit the basket and saw the lead slip away for a 52-46 final score.
