Michael Richard “Mickey” Griego of Trinidad, Colorado, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, one day before his 87th birthday.
Early Life & Background Mickey was born on January 14, 1939, in Trinidad, Colorado, to Alphonse Griego and Maxine Griego (Skibbie). He was raised in Trinidad and attended Holy Trinity / Trinidad Catholic Schools, where he was actively involved in athletics and numerous extracurricular activities. After graduating, Mickey married Beatrice Griego (Trujillo) and joined the United States Air Force, which took his young family to Lincoln, Nebraska for a brief period before returning home to Trinidad. Together, they raised four children: Cindy, Mike, Rich, and Gail. Following his military service, Mickey joined his father in the family business, Trinidad Sporting Goods, where he worked for many years.
He was an avid golfer and bowler, deeply involved with the Trinidad Golf Association, and committed many years to public service. Mickey served on the Trinidad City Council and as Mayor of Trinidad for numerous years, dedicating himself to the betterment of the community he loved, after his divorce from Beatrice in 1981, Mickey relocated to the Denver area for a short time, where he worked at the U.S. Mint in Denver and became a licensed real estate appraiser. Missing Trinidad-especially his mother and the Trinidad Golf Course-he returned home, continued his appraisal business, and later married his beloved wife, Phyllis. Mickey found his greatest joy on the golf course, cheering for the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, and Colorado Avalanche, walking his dogs Poncho and Chloe, and spending time with Phyllis and family. His faith was central to his life; he often spoke of early mornings spent in quiet prayer at Trinidad Catholic Church before services began.
