In loving memory of Mary Schutz
April 24, 1944 – January 16, 2026
Mary Carol Simms Schutz passed on January 16th at her home in Wagon Mound. Mary was born on April 24, 1944, in Albuquerque to her parents, Richard and Cecelia Simms. She was raised on her family’s ranch in Wagon Mound, a place that shaped her lifelong love of family, hard work, animals, and the land, and where she lived for much of her life.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life centered around caring for others. She was married to her beloved husband, Don Schutz for over 59 years, and together they built a life grounded in family, resilience, and hard work.
She was the proud mother of two sons. Her son Mike Schutz is the father of three cherished grandchildren, Ella, Bryce, and Zachary. Her son Steve Schutz is married to Akasha, and together they are parents to Henna and Dane, all of whom brought Mary immense joy and pride. Mary is also survived by her brother, Bill, and his wife, Barbara, along with many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Mary dedicated her professional life to education, serving as a bus driver, school teacher, principal, and administrator in the Wagon Mound School District spanning over two decades. Throughout her career, she impacted countless students, families, and colleagues. She was known for her empathy, her caring and thoughtful leadership style, and her unwavering focus to help others reach their full potential. Mary believed deeply in people and in the power of education, approaching every challenge with a never-quit attitude and a steady belief that everyone deserved to be seen, heard, and supported.
Above all, Mary will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and devotion to those she loved. Her legacy lives on through her family, the many lives she touched through her work, and the enduring example she set as a woman of compassion, determination, and grace.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A celebration of life for Mary will be held at the Wagon Mound High School gymnasium on Saturday, January 31st at 1pm.
