Van Swift, age76, of Trinidad, Colorado, passed away on January 2,2026. He was born on
October 16,1949.
Van was a proud graduate of Hoehne High School, Class of 1967. He honorably served his
country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam WaL including service in-country.
Following his military service, Van worked for 10 years at CF&l as a coal miner. He later
became a heavy equipment operator, working alongside his father Bill Swift. Then worked
for Evergreen/Pioneer and for Las Animas County as a heavy equipment operator. Through
his years of hard work, Van built a reputation for dedication, reliability, and strength.
After retiring, Van found joy in the simple things-taking his daily walks, helping his
neighbors, and staying connected to his community. ln the 1980s, Van was saved in the
church and developed a deep love for studying the Bible, which remained an important part
of his life.
Van is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Swift; his daughters, Hope Swift (Gary), Brenda
Carlisle-Swift (Heather), and Jennifer Knight; and his sons, Will Trujillo and Joe Trujillo
(Julie). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandson.
He is further survived by his siblings, Mona Gay Gonzales, Donald Swift, and Hugh Swift
(Janet), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Van will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his faith, his kindness to others, and his
quiet willingness to help those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and
loved him.
Van’s services will be held on Friday January 16,2025 at 1:00pm at Comi Chapel.
