Harold Edwin Fernandez ‘Ed”, 84, of Trinidad Colorado, passed away peacefully at the
University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico with family at his side on July
12,2025, following a courageous battle of numerous illnesses to include dementia and
pneumonia.
Born on August 7th, 1940, in Valdez, CO, Ed was the son of the late Fred and Ophelia
(Marquez) Fernandez. Upon graduation from Trinidad High School in 1958 he joined the
Colorado Army National Guard. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959. Ed dedicated
21 years of his life on active duty in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam War
Veteran. Ed obtained the rank of Master Sergeant and as a Flight Engineer was part of the flight
crew on modified KC-135 jet aircraft. He retired from the Air Force in June 1980 and moved to
his hometown of Trinidad, CO.
Ed married in 1959 and divorced in 1969. He and his former spouse had two children, Sharon
and Steven, for whom he was awarded full custody. Ed served in the military with various
assignments worldwide, including the Vietnam War. Between assignments and during overseas
assignments his mother Ophelia, and father Fred helped to raise his daughter and son. Ed was
owner and operator of the Wagon Wheel Saloon in El Moro, CO and owner/landlord of a couple
of homes in Trinidad CO. Ed Loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, boating & fishing at
the local dam.
He is survived by his children Sharon Fernandez Wik (Alan) of Dayton Ohio and Steven
Fernandez (Ann) of Albuquerque New Mexico: his grandchildren, Adam, Erik, Marissa and
Jason; his brother Carl Fernandez of Trinidad CO, sister Esther Cruz (Alex) of Cheyenne WY,
brother Norman Fernandez of Denver CO ; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his brothers George, Michael and Freddie Fernandez.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 7th, at Comi Funeral
Home in Trinidad, CO. Following the service, a Military Honors Service will take place at the
Catholic Cemetery where Ed’s ashes and urn will be interred in the columbarium niche.
Following the services a reception will be held at the Trails End Motel at 616 East Main Street
for family and close friends, food and drinks will be provided.
ln lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests that you donate to Local Veteran Organizations
such as the American legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
