SUMMARY:Centennial Celebration of Capulin Volcano as National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Capulin Volcano National Monument is turning 100 years old. Come by Tuesday\, August 9th for some “volcanic” cake\, listen to Woodrow Wilson\, and watch Oklahoman powwow dancers! All of these events will be free. Buddy the Bison\, the official mascot of the Department of the Interior\, plans to attend!\n\n\nLight refreshments\, including a volcanic cake\, will be served to visitors who drop by. Cake-cutting will take place at 12:30 PM. \n  \n\n\nAll performances will take place in front of the Visitor Center\, and will be free to the public. The regular admission fee of $7 will continue to be charged for driving up the Volcano Road. All America the Beautiful passes will be honored when presented. \n  \nThis is one of several events in the month of August to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Capulin Volcano National Monument and the National Park Service.\n\n\n\nCapulin Volcano has hired Frank Robinson\, Jr. to portray Woodrow Wilson\, twenty-eighth President of the United States and the man who declared Capulin Mountain a national monument on August 9th\, 1916. Within two weeks\, Wilson also signed legislation creating the National Park Service; the NPS Centennial will take place on August 25th. Robinson will deliver remarks in front of the Visitor Center as Wilson\, answer questions from visitors\, and pose for any photographers that want to capture an image with the man who modernized America. \n  \nOklahoma Fancy Dancers will also perform during the day.  They are a group of powwow champions that come together to form a professional and highly acclaimed Native American dance troupe. All the dancers are enrolled tribal members\, most of whom are full-blood\, representing various tribes. The award-winning dance regalia worn by each dancer is brilliantly colorful\, traditional and representative of the dancer’s tribe and dance performed. \n
