SUMMARY:Book Signing: A Prairie Mourning
DESCRIPTION:Local writer\, Pat Walsh\, will offer a book signing for her mystery novel\,  A Prairie Mourning\, on Saturday\, August 6th from 2 pm until 4 pm at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton.\n  \nWildlife activist Trish O’Neill sprawls dead from poison gas in a Colorado prairie dog town. Police think it’s an accident\, but Trish’s sister Faith isn’t buying. She recruits Native American Game Warden John Fox\, who reluctantly joins Faith’s quest for the truth. As violence sparks around them\, Faith struggles to find inner courage by looking to her historical hero—Silas Soule\, who opposed the Sand Creek Massacre of peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho people. But while writing Soule’s story provides Faith with a model of bravery\, her infatuation with a man dead for more than a hundred years interferes with her chances for love in the present. Both Faith and Fox face hard choices as danger swirls around them.

SUMMARY:Living History Celebration ~Capulin Volcano
DESCRIPTION:Capulin Volcano National Monument is hosting two living history groups during a Living History Celebration on Sunday\, August 7th; the Comanche Nation Youth Dancers and the New Mexico Territorial Brass Band will perform for visitors. Dance performances by the Comanche troupe are at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM\,  and the performance of the NMTBB will take place at 12 noon.\n  \nThis is one of several events in the month of August to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Capulin Volcano National Monument and the National Park Service.\n\nBoth performances are free to the public\, although the regular admission of $7 to drive to the top of the Volcano still applies.\n  \nThe Comanche Nation Youth Dancers are coming from Lawton\, OK\, to perform a traditional Comanche dance. Tribal garb and music will enhance the atmosphere of the Volcano\, as Comanche have visited the site for generations before it was a national monument. These high school age dancers and adult singers will bring a bit of living history to the visitors of the monument. The youngest member\, aged 6\, is incredibly excited to see a volcano! \n  \nThe New Mexico Territorial Brass Band is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the first generation of the American brass band tradition. The ensemble uses antique and reproduction instruments and wears authentic nineteenth and early twentieth-century clothing to capture the sight and sounds of this dramatic era. \n

SUMMARY:Centennial Celebration of Capulin Volcano as National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Capulin Volcano National Monument is turning 100 years old. Come by Tuesday\, August 9th for some “volcanic” cake\, listen to Woodrow Wilson\, and watch Oklahoman powwow dancers! All of these events will be free. Buddy the Bison\, the official mascot of the Department of the Interior\, plans to attend!\n\n\nLight refreshments\, including a volcanic cake\, will be served to visitors who drop by. All the dancers are enrolled tribal members\, most of whom are full-blood\, representing various tribes. The award-winning dance regalia worn by each dancer is brilliantly colorful\, traditional and representative of the dancer’s tribe and dance performed. \n
