SUMMARY:Care For The Caregiver~ Free Program at the Mandala Center
DESCRIPTION:The Mandala Center is offering a free program on Sunday\, July 26th from 2 pm to 5 pm with Hilece Rose\, RN for those who are caregivers or who are grieving over someone or something they have cared for and lost. It is hoped this is the first of regular meetings in which there will be an exploration of the issues that arise in care giving\, such as isolation\, the stages and trauma of grief and loss\, the need for change and fun.  \nExperiential activities to uncover and enhance the wealth within\, and techniques to comfort oneself\, and those for whom one cares\, will be shared. It will be a time and place to tell one’s story\, be exactly ‘where one is at’\, and witness the stories of others –  resulting in a sense of a community of care. \nHilece is an RN\, high honors graduate from Northern New Mexico Community College in 1991. She cared many years for her own mother\, providing 24/7 nursing care the last two years of her mother’s life. She works in long-term care.  Hilece has been the nurse for groups on journeys through India\, Nepal and Tibet\, as well as the ‘in house’ nurse on retreats. With a couple of doctors\, she facilitated a one-day clinic for monks and villagers in Mirik\, India\, tending to over 80 people. She received a healing from\, and studied with\, a Philippino  ‘psychic surgeon’ in 1998. She has been an EMT on the Taos Ambulance as well as in the HCH emergency room. Hilece is one of the facilitators and participants in a retreat center north of Questa. \nAfter life-changing losses\, Hilece attended Ted Wiard’s (Golden Willow Retreat Center) weekly ‘grief’ group in Taos for two years. In June of 2013\, she completed the 200 hour ‘Grief\, Loss and Trauma Counseling Certificate Program’ taught by Dr. Janet Schreiber at Southwestern College in Santa Fe. She has recently facilitated MCMC LTC’s “Care for Caregivers” group and their yearly memorial service.  She plays the harp at bedsides. \n Call the Mandala Center for more information:  575-278-3002.

SUMMARY:“Red or Green?” Chile Pepper Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Raton Museum will host a new exhibit from July 28th through September 26th:  “Red or Green?” The Origins and Cultural Significance of the Chile Pepper in New Mexico. \nPress Release from New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum\, LAS CRUCES: \nIt may not be from New Mexico originally\, but it has made quite an impression since it arrived. \nChile is the subject of a fun and educational exhibit created at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Museum in Las Cruces in 2010. Titled “Red or Green?” The Origins and Cultural Significance of the Chile Pepper in New Mexico\, the exhibit was also displayed in the Governor’s Gallery at the New Mexico State Capitol in Santa Fe for five months beginning in December 2012. The exhibit’s next stop will be at The Raton Museum in Raton\, New Mexico\, where it will be on display beginning in July 2015. \nThe fun and educational exhibit focuses on New Mexico chile varieties\, their history and evolution\, and how they came to have such a central place in the state’s culture. \n“A major theme of the exhibit is how chile became such an integral part of New Mexico without being native\,” said Cameron Saffell\, formerly the historian for the Museum and a curator of the exhibit. “It’s a part of three state symbols\, there are festivals all over the state\, and now we have the state’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail.” \nThe state Legislature named the chile as a state vegetable in 1965 and designated Red or Green?” as the state question in 1996\, in reference to whether you prefer red or green chile on your food. \nThe exhibit traces the origins of the chile and how the Spanish brought the plant to the American Southwest in the early 1600s. It features the emergence of regional production centers such as Hatch and Chimayo\, and the development of specific varieties by researchers such as Fabian Garcia at New Mexico A&MA College in the early 1900s. \nFollowing the historical section\, the exhibit focuses on how the chile became a key component of New Mexico culture – both as a cuisine and as a symbol. \nThe Raton Museum108 South 2nd StreetRaton\, NM  87740575-445-8979theratonmuseum.orgratonmuseum@gamil.com  \nHours of Operation:May thru SeptemberTuesday thru Saturday9:00 am – 5:00 pm \n

SUMMARY:Classic Night at the Movies~ Windtalkers (2002)
DESCRIPTION:Classic Night at the Movies presents Windtalkers* (2002) at El Raton Movie Theatre on Wednesday\, July 29th at 7 pm. FREE!!  Donations gratefully accepted for the Colfax County Young Marines. Sponsored by KRTN\, El Raton Theatre and Raton Natural Gas. \nWindtalkers* is a 2002 American war film starring Nicolas Cage\, Adam Beach\, Mark Ruffalo and Christian Slater. The fictional script takes place during World War II as two U.S. Marines are assigned to protect Navajo Marines who use their native language as an unbreakable radio cypher. \n*Rated R for pervasive graphic war violence\, and for language \nThe real-life Navajo Code was  based on two parts:  1) the Navajo language (notoriously difficult to learn or to understand); and 2) a code embedded in the language\, meaning that even native speakers would be confused by it. Supposedly\, this code was close to unbreakable\, but so difficult only a few people could actually learn it.

\nThe Raton Museum108 South 2nd StreetRaton\, NM  87740575-445-8979theratonmuseum.orgratonmuseum@gamil.com  \nHours of Operation:May thru SeptemberTuesday thru Saturday9:00 am – 5:00 pm

SUMMARY:New Mexico Back to School Tax-Free Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Tax Holiday\n\n\n\n\n\nBack to School Tax Free Holiday\nComing soon to a retail store near you is the annual New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday. This year it’s August 7-9\, and if you have school-age children\, it’s nothing short of a bonanza. For that weekend the state suspends collection of gross receipts tax on sales of qualifying items so you can buy the items tax free. Because many merchants also absorb the tax on a number of non-qualifying items\, you are the beneficiary all around.  \nThe tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on August 7\, 2015 and concludes on August 9\, 2015 at midnight. \nDuring that time the law provides a deduction from gross receipts for retail sales of qualifying tangible personal property; in effect allowing the retailer to sell the items “tax free.”  \nB-200.18\, List of Taxable and Non Taxable Items for New Mexico’s Gross Receipts Tax Holiday contains list divided into categories\, but please note that within some categories there is a set dollar maximum. To qualify for the deduction\, clothing or shoes must be priced at less than $100 per unit. The price limit for desktop\, laptop\, tablets or notebook computers is $1\,000\, and for related computer hardware it is $500. School supplies for use in standard\, general-education classrooms must be under $30 per unit. There are items specifically excluded by statute in all categories. Those items are always taxable.   \nFor more specific information on the legislation\, definitions\, types of sales\, (rain checks\, exchanges\, refunds\, gift cards\, layaways\, Internet\, mail order and telephone sales) please see FYI-203\,Gross Receipts Tax Holiday. \n \n1100 South St. Francis Drive Santa Fe\, NM 87504(505) 827-0700 \nhttp://www.tax.newmexico.gov/tax-holiday.aspx
