First Day Hikes offer individuals and families the opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on January 1\, 2015 at a state park close tohome. Hikers can expect to be surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature in winter\, experience spectacular views and vistas and benefit from the company of a knowledgeable state park guide. \nIn Northeastern New Mexico:Eagle Nest Lake – Hike at 11 am (Easy to Strenuous)Sugarite Canyon – Hike at 10 am (Easy Hike Level) \nNew Mexico’s State Parks boast a wide variety of beautiful settings for year-round outdoor recreation\, and each First Day Hike will offer an opportunity to explore unique natural and cultural treasures close to home. From Sugarite Canyon in the north to Rockhound in the south\, hikers can climb hills and mountain tops\, walk along ponds\, beaches and dams\, and traverse trailsthrough forests\, fields and deserts.  \nPark staff and volunteers will lead the hikes\, which average one to two miles or longer depending on the state park. DESCRIPTION:Raton Choral Society\, New Mexico’s oldest performing arts group\, will hold stage and vocal auditions for their upcoming production of “Hello\, Dolly!”. Auditions will be held in the Shuler Theater and the Isabel Castillo Performing Arts Center on January 8th and 9th from 6:30PM – 8PM and on January 10th from 2:30PM – 4PM.  \nAudition materials and more information may be obtained at the Shuler Theater. DESCRIPTION:The Raton Arts and Humanities Council in partnership with the City of Raton Department of Parks and Recreation cordially invite you to participate in the 3rd Annual \nShades of the Southwest \nNortheastern New Mexico – Southeastern Colorado Youth Art Show \nRaton\, New Mexico \n January 13 – Feb 1\, 2015 \nOld Pass Art Gallery\, 145 South First Street\, Raton NM \nAccepting work: by 2:00\, Jan. 10Hanging show: Jan. 12Reception: Jan. 17\, 1:00pm  \nMedia Categories: \n1. Graphite\, Colored Pencil\, Pen and ink\, Charcoal \n2. Oil\, Acrylic\, Water Color\, Pastel \n3. Ceramic\, Sculpture\, Mixed Media \n4. Photography \nAge Divisions: Kindergarden-2nd Grade\, 3rd-5th Grade\, 6th-8th Grade (Middle School)\, 9th-12th Grade (High School) \nTheme: There is NO theme for the show.  All art is welcome. \nSubmission Criteria:  Art is to be matted and framed and hang ready.  Frames can be store bought or fabricated.   (Framing is worth 10 points on the judges score sheet) Submissions must be accompanied with the artist’s name\, media\, grade\, school’s name and contact info and art teacher’s name.  \nSubmission Deadline:  Submissions are due by 2 pm\, Saturday\, January 10\, 2015 at the historic Old Pass Gallery.   Each school (Elementary\, Middle\, and High School) is invited to submit up to 8 pieces of art for the entire show.  \nEach Age Division within each Media Category will be judged by independent judges (3) and a First Place\, Second Place and Third Place will be awarded for each Age Division within each Media Category.  A $50 Best in Show will be awarded for each Age Group and $100 People’s Choice will be awarded for the entire show.  \nThe show will be at the Old Pass Art Gallery.  Artists will have the options to sell their art if they like. \nThere will be a reception on Saturday January 17\, 2015 @ 1pm.
