SUMMARY:Fishing Derby at Sugarite Canyon State Park
DESCRIPTION:Sugarite Canyon State Park is hosting its annual\, nine-day Fishing Derby at Lake Maloya from Saturday\, May 28th through Sunday\, June 5th.\n\n\nThis event offers cash prizes up to $1\,000 and a chance at a $3\,000 boat. Anglers fish for tagged rainbow trout for an immediate prize and a chance at the cash. All registrants go into the boat drawing and are eligible for daily door prizes. Register at the Park’s Visitor Center\, Two-Way Electronics (Formerly Radio Shack)\, or High Desert Outdoors. The registration fee is just $10 per person for the Fishing Derby. Regular park fees and rules apply.\nAlso\, there is a free kids’ fishing derby Saturday\, June 4th. Prizes are awarded for the heaviest live rainbow trout presented in each age group.\n \nSugarite Canyon State Park is located about six miles northeast of Raton\, N.M. Join us at the Visitor Center for coffee & homemade cinnamon rolls to watch birds such as goldfinches at the feeders. \n  \n8 a.m. Bird Walk for Beginners. Meet at the Visitor Center for an easy half-mile walk along Chicorica Creek. Binoculars and guides provided. \n  \n9 a.m. Coffee with a Ranger. Come to the Lake Alice Campground for coffee and doughnuts and some camp-chair birding. Binoculars and guides provided. \n  \n10:15 a.m. Hummingbirds in Your Hand. Assist rangers from the National Park Service in the process of banding hummingbirds at the park Visitor Center. \n  \n1 p.m. The Big Guys! Lake Alice Campground. Come meet live birds such as a Swainson’s hawk and a turkey vulture\, two birds who migrate to our area. \n  \n2 p.m. Just for Kids. Soda Pocket Amphitheater. Bird-related crafts\, games and activities for kids. Designed for kids 6-12. \n  \n8:30 p.m. Star Birds of the Night Sky. Soda Pocket Campground. Explore the night sky by laser and telescope to see Aquila the Eagle and Cygnus the Swan!
