SUMMARY:“Red or Green?”  Chile Pepper Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Raton Museum will host a new exhibit from July 28th through September 26th:  “Red or Green?” The Origins and Cultural Significance of the Chile Pepper in New Mexico. \nPress Release from New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum\, LAS CRUCES: \nIt may not be from New Mexico originally\, but it has made quite an impression since it arrived. \nChile is the subject of a fun and educational exhibit created at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Museum in Las Cruces in 2010. Titled “Red or Green?” The Origins and Cultural Significance of the Chile Pepper in New Mexico\, the exhibit was also displayed in the Governor’s Gallery at the New Mexico State Capitol in Santa Fe for five months beginning in December 2012. The exhibit’s next stop will be at The Raton Museum in Raton\, New Mexico\, where it will be on display beginning in July 2015. \nThe fun and educational exhibit focuses on New Mexico chile varieties\, their history and evolution\, and how they came to have such a central place in the state’s culture. \n“A major theme of the exhibit is how chile became such an integral part of New Mexico without being native\,” said Cameron Saffell\, formerly the historian for the Museum and a curator of the exhibit. “It’s a part of three state symbols\, there are festivals all over the state\, and now we have the state’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail.” \nThe state Legislature named the chile as a state vegetable in 1965 and designated Red or Green?” as the state question in 1996\, in reference to whether you prefer red or green chile on your food. \nThe exhibit traces the origins of the chile and how the Spanish brought the plant to the American Southwest in the early 1600s. SUMMARY:ShortGrass Music Festival Concert with "Steep Ravine"
DESCRIPTION:The ShortGrass Music Festival continues to present live music in the greater Cimarron area with the band STEEP RAVINE on Friday\, September 18th at 7pm at the Kit Carson Museum/Rayado at Philmont Scout Ranch. Tickets $10.00 (under 18 Free). \nBlending equal parts poetic lyricism and string-playing ingenuity\, STEEP RAVINE’S soulful tunes and sinewy instrumentals are pushing the indie folk\, Americana\, and jazz groove in compelling new stylistic directions. The band came on strong to the music scene in late 2013 with the release of their debut album of originals\, Trampin’ On. Within a month\, the album started racking up reviews and receiving lots of airplay\, making it onto the Radio DJ Folk Music Chart of Top Albums and Songs for January 2014. \nSince then\, Steep Ravine has gained steady recognition and embarked on two national tours\, with notable appearances at such esteemed venues as Strawberry Music Festival\, High Sierra Music Festival\, Four Corners Folk Festival\, Northwest String Summit\, Redwood Ramble\, and Pickamania. The band has also been featured live on multiple radio stations including NPR’s West Coast Live. Band mates SIMON LINSTEADT (principal songwriter\, guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, lead vocals)\, JAN PURAT (violin\, vocals)\, and ALEX BICE (bass\, percussion\, drums\, vocals) form the core of the band. Linsteadt and Purat began playing music together back in high school in Northern California\, later moving on to study music at the California Jazz Conservatory and UC Santa Cruz\, where they fortuitously met Bice in 2012. \nWrites Bluegrass Unlimited: “Fronted by the clear wispy tenor voice of Simon Linsteadt\, it’s hard not to be struck immediately by the freshness of this band’s material and approach… weaving threads of wistful heartache and longing into images of natural beauty and wonder\, all infused with threads of bluegrass\, swing\, and even traces of pop/folk into a collection that’s full of sweet surprises.
