Raton City Commissioners met Tuesday March 5, 2024, for a special meeting to take care of three items involving the airport, mapping, and the Kearney School.

On October 18, 2023, the EPA inspected the fuel farm at Crews Field and found the area to be deficient for overflow and spill prevention which is a violation of some new requirements. The city has applied for a grant for $21,467 which is time sensitive to do the work.

The city is working with Consensus Planning Professional Services to create a web-based map for the city zoning. The city has requested some additional work, to create an interactive map for city zoning.  The cost of this additional work is $1480.00 to identify errors and incorporate corrections to the data curation.

Before the renovation work can begin an environmental inspection has been requested. Raton Schools had done an inspection previously and Commissioner Mark Honeyfield asked about that report and was it considered adequate for this purpose. City Engineer Jaden Welch noted that he thought the school’s report did not include lead. Honeyfield suggested we get a local contractor to do the sampling for the lead and have it tested ourselves. He also asked about the abatement the schools had previously done and how much of that will be covered or will some of it need to be removed. The cost of the work by Vigil and Associates comes in at $5134 + GRT. With that in mind Honeyfield was asking why we need to do this again especially if the report is adequate, unless the financing entity was requesting an updated report. Welch thought he could get all the information by the next meeting, so the matter was postponed to the March 12, 2024, meeting.
