Big Winds Cause Big Problems

Strong winds, the like not ever felt before, ripped through Southern Colorado, on Monday, January 9th causing power outages, overturning big rig trucks, railroad cars, trees and snapping utility poles, shattering windows and ripping roofs off.

Most of the damage was done in El Paso County Colorado, but the ripple effect of trees falling into power lines and power poles snapping, left thousands of residents in the dark, including in Raton and Trinidad after Tri-State Electric suffered the damage.  RPS customers in Raton were without power for most of the six hours from 2 till 8 pm. RPS requested to be switched over to the southern leg of Tri-State coming in from Springer electric Coop and authorization was given with  the switchover happening a little past eight pm.

The winds reportedly turned over some 16 tractor-trailer rigs between Monument Hill and Trinidad and a 70 car coal train was  blown over near Ludlow.

Robert Walton, RPS General Manager told KRTN that the switchover back to the north for Burro Canyon Line was set for 4 pm on Tuesday.

Bruno’s Pizza and Wings

By Susan Ward, KRTN

Pioneer Natural Resources presents KRTN’s Super Star of Business for September:  Bruno’s Pizza and Wings.

Co-owner of Bruno’s Pizza and Wings, Mandy Hess, was our guest at KRTN on September 3, 2015.

Located at 244 South First Street in downtown Raton, Bruno’s Pizza and Wings serves up some of the best homemade pizza, chicken wings and salads in the area. Customers are already claiming their favorites:  The New Mexican Pizza, Green Chile Chicken Pizza, Cranberry Chipotle Wings and Spinach Salad.

Mandy Hess, co-owner of Bruno's Pizza and Wings, visits KRTN.

Owners Aaron Ley and Mandy Hess took some time to decide and start their own business in Raton. Mandy has been a part-time social worker, a counselor and a busy mom to her young children. Her partner, Aaron Ley, always made pizzas at home and “is really good at it.” Aaron had been working in the oilfield business in North Dakota, but is now with their family on a daily basis.

Aaron and Mandy opened Bruno’s Pizza and Wings in July 2015 with about 20 employees. KRTN’s Billy D noted, “You have an even bigger family now!” Billy D added, “It’s not easy to own your own business. But eating is great therapy. We all need to eat and break bread… And this is America! I’m loving this!”

The symbol of a bear (bruin, “Bruno”) makes a lot of sense for the town and tourists of Raton! Bruno’s displays a sports motif that is a welcomed addition to Historic First Street. Large-screen TVs showing sporting events can entertain guests while they anticipate their main course.

Convenient options for customers include Call-In/Take-Out Service (anytime) and Pizza-By-The-Slice (during lunch). Guests will appreciate that Bruno’s Pizza and Wings is open six days per week; they are only closed on Tuesdays.

brunos pizzaAaron Ley prepares homemade pizza dough everyday and assures the quality and taste of each pizza that leaves Bruno’s busy kitchen. Mandy Hess told Billy D that Bruno’s “adds a depth of flavor to each pizza with a dusting of the House Cheese Blend of Asiago, Provolone and Romano cheeses.” As KRTN Sales Manager, Alan Kenny, commented, “One cannot function without cheese!” Bruno’s offers twelve different pizzas in 12″ and 16″ sizes and encourages customers to “Create Your Own.” Bruno’s can even prepare gluten-free pizzas as needed.

Bruno’s brings Buffalo Chicken Wings and eight more flavors of tasty wings to Northeastern New Mexico. Customers can order baskets of ten (10) wings at a very reasonable price. Four different salads (in two sizes) are prepared to order and are a delicious beginning to your meal.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Bruno’s Pizza and Wings was on Labor Day, September 7, 2015. KRTN welcomes Aaron, Mandy, their children and their “new family” of employees as September’s Super Stars of Business!

More than pot is growing in Huerfano County

Farm to table food movement thrives with the support of interns
by Bob Kennemer
WJ 250x55HUERFANO — For several years now, several groups, both for profit and nonprofit, have been providing healthy, wholesome, locally grown, organic foods to area residents and restaurants.  Often referred to as “farm to table,” this movement is really not all that new.  It is just making a comeback.
One of the first organizations to undertake this effort in the area is the Shii Koeii Community located near Gardner along the Huerfano River.  In fact, Shii Koeii is the Jicarilla Apache name for the river.
Husband and wife team Mark Schneider and Val Phillips just celebrated seven years this past May as founders of Shii Koeii.  Val hails from Denver, which is where she met Mark as they worked  with the American Friends Service Committee, Catholic Charities, and other groups as community organizers.  The two had a goal to get out of the city and live on the land.
They see themselves as stewards of the land living in an intentional community.
With permission from the county, they ultimately foresee several families residing at Shii Koeii.  But for now, the community is made up of interns (also called apprentice stewards).  Their numbers vary, but Shii Koeii has had up to 25 interns at a time, with an average of around 15 to 18.
These apprentice stewards come from all over the United States and around the world, all with a similar vision as Mark and Val;  to grow healthy food using sustainable practices.  One intern is Beaman Martin from San Antonio, Texas, who is on his second internship at Shii Koeii.
Martin is a graduate from the renowned culinary school Johnson and Wales.  He sees being a chef as more than just cooking great food, he wants to learn how to live sustainably and how to grow the food he prepares. “I want to learn more about animal husbandry and how to make cheese” says Beaman.  To that end, Shii Koeii provides him with eight dairy goats and dozens of laying hens.
Kristen LeBlanc, arrived at Shii Koeii in January from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  “It [Shii Koii] has everything I wanted to learn abou;  solar energy, animal husbandry, and organic food,” stated Kristen.  She added, “I want to be a farmer.  My dream is to recreate something like Shii Koeii but closer to a city.”  LeBlanc and other apprentice stewards all commented on how different it is to be living so remotely with very few other people their own age and with similar interests.
From “across the pond” comes Ben Mark, who calls London, England home.  Mark said, “I went from a city of over one million people to Gardner, which has around 500!”  He arrived in April and says the learning curve is hard but he is starting to get it.  “I love the animals,” he says as he picks up a newborn kid goat.
At 19, Mark notes that he and his friends in England share similar goals as the other interns at Shii Koeii saying, “My friends and I want to live close to the land, grow organic food, create art (he is an English and drama major in Sussex), build solar structures, and learn how to cook.  My dream is to write a book about this experience.”
Sitting on 75 acres in the beautiful Huerfano River Valley, Shii Koeii and its stewards make tasty goat cheese, gather fresh eggs, and harvest organic vegetables (they have 26 varieties of heirloom tomatoes), which they eat and sell at various local farmer’s markets.  They all are tanned, healthy, and happy.
Val summed it up with these words from her grandmother, “It is good luck to step in goat poop!”  At Shii Koeii, good luck is everywhere.
Editor’s note: This is part one in a series on Huerfano County’s various farm to table programs, focusing on the interns, who are visiting our area and learning new life skills.
