Fire Destroys House on North Fourth

Raton Fire and Emergency Services firefighters spent about two hours battling and cleaning up a fire that destroyed a house at 801 N 4th St. in Raton Wednesday evening.

The call came in about 6:04 p.m. Wednesday evening of a house on fire. The building was unoccupied at the time and is considered a total loss. According to interim Fire Chief Chris Espinoza the cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, arson is suspected.

The property owner is an absentee owner living in Washington state and will be responsible for cleanup of the property. According to City Manager Scott Berry the city will work with the land owner to get the property cleaned up as soon as they can.

    What about other house that have caught on fire and the property never cleaned up. I’m talking in particular about the house on North 3rd St that caught fire years ago!!! Why has that eyesore not been cleaned up. What’s good for one should be good for all.
