The 2017 Gate City Music Festival

By Marty Mayfield –

KRTN Multi-Media –

The weather was great for the outdoor portion of the 3rd Annual Gate City Music Festival held on Historic First Street in downtown Raton over the Labor Day weekend 2017.

While the crowds came and went during the event it was Colfax Reunion that drew the dancing crowd Saturday evening to downtown Raton. Colfax Reunion was chosen to perform for the free street dance that culminated Saturday’s events of the 2017 Gate City Music Festival. Spectators Saturday listened to the likes of DJ Ernie Brown, Stranded and Capton Reid and were able to enjoy BBQ, turkey legs and corn on the cob from the food vendors. Craft venders and others lined the street and grass areas of the recently completed Multi-Modal Center in downtown Raton. RPS put in special electrical setup for the Mechanical Bull Riding that the kids really seemed to enjoy as they kept it going most of the day Saturday and Sunday. Local brewery Colfax Ale Cellar along with Red Door Brewery and Blacks Smuggler Winery provided the spirits for the event.

The music continued Sunday on First Street with Fiddler and Friends, DJ Ernie Brown, Smooth Riders Jazz Quartet and the Dewey Paul Band and the other activities before the big show in the Shuler Theater. The show in the Shuler began at 7:00 p.m. with an amazing talent in 16 year old singer songwriter Parker Twomey from Dallas, Texas. The young singer won the right to perform this year’s event in a singer songwriter contest held by Crystal and Will Yates. Crystal and Will took the stage next where they once again showed their music talents and Crystal talked about performing in the Shuler.

Suzy Bogguss and her acoustic band took the stage and wowed the crowd as they sang and interacted with them in the intimate setting of the Shuler Theater. One of the songs she sang required crowd involvement, all they had to sing was “Eat at Joe’s” which they did with vigor. Afterward,  the singers were in the Shuler lobby to meet and sign memorabilia for the fans attending the show.

The CappTon Reid band played Saturday afternoon for the crowd at the 2017 Gate City Music Festival over the Labor Day weekend.

Lady Tigers Take Match in Three Saturday

By Marty Mayfield

KRTN Multi-Media

The Lady Tigers continued the winning streak over Trinidad as they took the volleyball match in three games Saturday afternoon to add to the victory the boys put in Friday night against Trinidad.

The Raton c-team however dropped both of their games to Trinidad Saturday morning in Tiger Gym as the young team struggled with controlling the ball and getting it over the net.

The JV girls with game experience from the last three or four years of playing together took early leads in each game and held on to wins in both.

The varsity girls took to the court and in game one Raton fell behind but soon gained their rhythm and came back from a four point deficit to tie the game at 14. It went back and fourth from there until Raton finally pulled out in front and went on to win the game. The girls struggled with their spikes over the net sending many out of bounds. The Lady Miners capitalized on that early one but soon they too struggled with the spikes and keeping the ball in bounds.

Game two Raton took an early lead and expanded it but soon hit a snag and allowed the Lady Miners to come back to within a point. It was a struggle as both teams managed to get the first volley past the other. Raton however prevailed and won the second game by six.

Game three once again saw Raton take the quick early lead and stretch it out to as many as six before Trinidad worked back in close with extended volleys. Finally Raton managed to find the groove and took the lead for good to win by four.

Raton Takes Coal Bucket Back in Shut Out Game

By Marty Mayfield

KRTN Multi-Media

Raton’s defense struck quick on the first play of the game when Trinidad fumbled the ball and three plays later the offense punched it over the goal line for six and that would set the tone for the rest of the game as Raton shut out Trinidad 46-0 to take the Coal Bucket back. Coach Tory Giacomo noted after the game it was great to get the bucket back in Raton as the series is now tied at 6 wins apiece and Trinidad had won three in a row up until the Friday night home-opener for the Tigers on September 1st.

Trinidad’s next series went four and out as they turned the ball over on downs, Raton promptly rushed the ball down to the goal line where Richie Acevedo found a hole and crossed the goal line from the two. Aden Vanderwater’s PAT was good and it was a 14-0 ball game.

Trinidad unable to make the plays to move the ball once again turned the ball over on downs but a holding penalty forced Raton into a punting situation. A holding call against Trinidad on the punt put them at their own 10 yard-line. A fumble on the next play recovered by Rafael Maso gave Raton the ball at the 10 where quarterback Dustin Segura scrambled for another Raton six. Vanderwater’s PAT was good and it was a 21-0 game at 8:13 in the second quarter.

Trinidad fumbled on the kickoff and Raton takes over on the 42. Three plays later its a 29 yard pass play to Nathaniel Tarbox for six more. Vanderwater’s PAT is good leaving it a 28-0 game. Trinidad held Raton from scoring and got the ball back with only five seconds left in the half where quarterback Josiah Portenier takes a knee to end the half.

Raton takes the onside kick to start the second half and on a 21 yard pass play from Segura to Tarbox adds six more to the board, with the 2-point try after a mishandled snap fails and leaves it 34-0.

Trinidad suffers a pass interception by Richie Acevedo, and Raton takes over on the 50. Three plays later Segura scrambles over the goal line for another Raton six. Trinidad starts moving the ball as several JV players man the Raton defense but Aden Vanderwater ends that series with a pass interception to begin the fourth quarter. Raton punches the ball in with a 46 yard pass play to Gabe Martinez for another Raton six. Its now a 46-0 game at 6:34 on the fourth quarter continuos running clock.

Trinidad takes the kickoff and Dilan Villa takes the ball to the 50 yard-line. From there Trinidad makes a last ditch effort to score taking the ball down to the 10. An unsportsman like penalty moves the ball to the five but Portenier just couldn’t connect with his receivers to get the ball in as the buzzer sounds to end the Coal Bucket game 46-0.

Raton next travels to Socorro for a tough game there and back to Raton for the Homecoming festivities and a Friday night game with Questa on September 15.
