In Loving Memory of Samuel J. Madrid

Samuel J. Madrid, age 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September   7, 2017 at Presbyterian Hospital after a long struggle with  Muscular Dystrophy.  He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully entered Heavenʼs gate.
 
 
Sam was born in Alamosa, CO July 30, 1930.  He was the son of John and Viola Madrid.
 
 
madrid SAfter graduating from Alamosa HS, he attended Adam State College for one year before beginning his military career.  Sam honorably served in the Navy from 1948 to 1953 and in the Army from 1954 to 1970.  During his years of service, he was stationed in Korea, Viet Nam and Turkey.  He received numerous medals for his service including Viet Nam Service and Campaign medals, Good Conduct medal and Army Commendation medal. After retiring from the military, Sam returned to Colorado where he worked in the banking, financial and hotel industries.  His passion was serving his community, children and the church.  He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis, Salvation Army and the Senior Citizen Center.  He served the Aguilar Presbyterian Church as a volunteer Lay Pastor for 25 years.  Sam was a School Board member of the Trinidad school district #1 for 30 years where he worked to promote the education of children and youth.
 
 
Sam was married to Ruth Madrid from 1955 to 1998 when she passed away.  They had three children.   He is survived by:  Children – Rick Madrid (Brian Pinson), Jeff (Alice) Madrid, Sara Madrid (Reggie Blakey);  Grandchildren – Brandon Madrid, Nikkol (Garland) Alexander, Joshua Madrid, Kimberly Madrid and Aubrey Madrid; Siblings – Solema Newton (Tom-deceased), Sylvia (Don) Headrick, Richard (Chris) Madrid, Stephanie Quintana (Jim Smith); Great grandson – Clyde Alexander and special cousin Viola Hinninger. Sam married Julia A. Madrid in 2000.  He is survived by: Wife – Julia A. Madrid; Stepchildren Bernice (Paul) McLaughlin, Mike (Charlene) Benavidez, Ruth (Jim) Woodard, Grandchildren – Paul (Melanie) McLaughlin, Amy (Lonney) Kimmel,  Jessica ((Matt) Kershen, Roger Woodard, Kimberly Apodaca, Tony (Martha) Benavidez, Louise (Mark) Boone, Dawn Toole, Mike Toole; and 19 great grandchildren.  Sam is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
 
 
Visitation will be WEd.  September 13, 2017 from 2:00-6:00 PM at the Comi Chapel.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN LOCATION OF FUNERAL SERVICES, THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS:

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2017 AT 10AM AT HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH, WITH PASTOR BILL FERRIS OFFICIATING.

Interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Thomas Newton, Sgt. Joshua Madrid, Stephen Quintana, Rafael Quintana, Mike Vigil and Tony Benavidez.
