It was a cold blustery afternoon as game time approached in Raton for the first round of 3A state baseball action Wednesday afternoon as #4 ranked Raton hosted #13 ranked Eunice to see which team would advance in the the state playoffs.

These two teams met in Portales during the year at a tourney there and Raton 10 run ruled that game but as the first inning came and went with no score it was looking like a tough game was in store. Eunice scored one in the second with Raton putting a run over the plate as well. The next score came in the fifth inning as Eunice once again got a runner around the bases followed by Raton scoring one as well.

Tied at two at the end of the seventh this game was going into extra innings. Raton held Eunice scoreless and then loaded the bases for the third time Wednesday afternoon and then went three up three down at the plate in the bottom of the eighth leaving the bases loaded. Eunice got Hayden Dean on first then he stole second. He then made it to third and the winning run was just waiting for something to happen. He didn’t have to wait to long as a wild pitch went high, Dean took the chance and made it home for the run giving Eunice a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth.

Raton then had the opportunity in the bottom of the ninth to win or loose this game and as luck would have it a bobbled ball allowed Gabe Martinez to make it to first. The tying run was on base and Martinez would soon make it across home plate for the tie. Cole Medina then made it to second on a double and the winning run was on base. Medina then headed home on another hit and the game was over with a 4-3 win by Raton to move them on to the next round of state baseball action in Albuquerque against McCurdy on Wednesday afternoon.
