In Loving Memory of Ruth Trujillo

Ruth Trujillo, 80, passed away on Saturday, October 1st, 2016, at Sangre de Cristo Hospice in Pueblo, Colorado, following a lengthy illness.

Ruth was born in Dawson, New Mexico, to Antonio and Teresita Montoya.  She moved to Raton following the closure of the Dawson coal mine and graduated from Raton High School.  She married Nick L. Trujillo in 1954.  They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary together while both were patients at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo. Together they raised three children.

trujilloRuth was employed by the Raton Public Schools at Longfellow Elementary School from 1964 until her retirement in 1986.  She enjoyed her role as the Headstart Teacher for hundreds of Raton’s children.  She provided a nurturing environment to inspire her students to love learning and reach for the stars.  She took great pride in watching them become successful at school and in their careers.  She was a generous woman who was so committed to her students that she began the adoption process of one of her students whom she felt would prosper in their family home.  Ruth was active as president of the Longfellow P. T. A., the Raton Little League, and the Court Appointed Special Advocate (C.A.S.A.) Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Stella Esquibel, her brother Albert Montoya, and infant son, Nick Charles.  She is survived by her husband, Nick, their children:  Danny, wife Ernestine, & family; Debbie, husband Lee Joe Sanchez, & family; and Donna, husband Ron Stoller, & family; special nephews:  Joe, Pete, and David Esquibel, brother Fred Montoya of Dallas; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services for Ruth Trujillo are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home and will be held in the Yaksich-Long Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 1:00 p.m.  Inurnment will follow at Fairmont Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 1107 Pueblo
