At its annual scholarship awards banquet August 5th, the Sloat-Prince Foundation awarded eight
scholarships to graduates of Colfax County high schools for the 2016-2017 academic year.
The Foundation was founded by Ruth and Shirley Prince of Raton in 2006. Scholarship
recipients must be Colfax County graduates or current residents and must maintain a 2.8
grade point average in a minimum of 12 hours. Scholarship recipients may apply for a new
scholarship each academic year but may not receive scholarships for more than a total of
four academic years. Scholarships range in value from $500 to $3,000. Sloat-Prince
Foundation Board members are Shirley Prince, President, Paul Kastler, Steve McConnell
and Thelma Coker.
The following awards were made for the 2016-2017 academic year:
Rhiannnon Barela, 2015 Raton High School graduate, 2nd award, ENMU, Business
Administration, $3,000.
Rebecca Galli, 2015 Maxwell High School graduate, 2nd award, NMSU, Biology and Spanish,
$3,000.
Amy Gonzales, 2015 Cimarron High School graduate, 2nd award, University of New Mexico,
Exercise Science (Physical Therapy), $3,000.
McKenna Hedgepeth, 2013 Moreno Valley High School graduate, 4th award, Northern
Arizona University, Forestry and Civic Engagement, $3,000.
Autumn Hunnicutt, 2013 Raton High School graduate, 2nd award, NMSU, Studio Art,
$3,000.
Jami Lopez, 2016 Raton High School graduate, 1st award, CSU Pueblo, 1st award, Business
Management, $1,500.
Lakken Medina, 2013 Raton High School graduate, 3rd award, NMSU, Dance and
Educational Counseling, $3,000.
Kelli Ortiz, 2013 Raton High School graduate, 4th award, UNM, Art Education, $3,000.
