Inmate Back In Custody After Short-lived Escape

PRESS RELEASE from Colfax County Sheriff’s Office:

 

On 05/23/2016 at 1632 hours Sgt. Bill LaPorte of the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office heard a radio call from Sgt. Orlando Avila of the Raton Police Department that an inmate who was being transported from Magistrate Court in Raton back to the Vigil Maldonado Detention Center by detention center staff had escaped. The inmate was identified as Nathaniel Casias of Raton.

 
Deputies from the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Raton Police Department quickly responded to the area of Rio Grande and South 4th St in Raton where they set up a perimeter. Deputies and officers started systematically searching the area based on a 911 call from a citizen who was working outside and saw the inmate run into a yard located on Rio Grande.

 
The Inmate was located in a small shed behind a residence by Sgt. Bill LaPorte, Officer John Valdez of the Raton Police Department, and Deputy Robert Gonzales. Casias was taken back into custody and transported to the Vigil Maldonado Detention Center, and has been charged with Escape from Jail, and Criminal Damage to Property less than 1000.00.
