NM Game & Fish Fishing report for May 10, 2016

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week:

  • Brantley Lake: John White of Kayenta, Ariz., caught and released a 21-inch largemouth bass May 2. He was using a black plastic worm. Russ Nay of Enid, Okla., caught and released a 19-inch largemouth bass May 2. He was using a black plastic worm.

  • Cochiti Lake:  Reece Watson of Albuquerque caught a 24-inch walleye and a 26-inch northern pike May 2. He caught the walleye on a chartreuse and white spinner bait and the pike on a 3-inch white grub.

  • Elephant Butte Lake: Pat Scott of Weston, Colo., caught a 42-inch, 27.7-pound striped bass May 4. He was fishing in about 40-feet of water and using a crank bait. He also caught several walleye in about 18 feet of water.

  • Rio Grande: Eric Aguilar of El Paso caught a 15-pound, flathead catfish May 1 and a 21-pound, flathead catfish May 2. He was fishing the river below Caballo and using night crawlers. Daniel Kloepell of Los Chavez caught a 23-inch, 7-pound channel catfish and a 29-inch, 14-pound flathead catfish May 7. He was using shad.

  • Storrie Lake: Daniel Chavez of Las Vegas, N.M. caught a 31.5-inch, 17.5-pound channel catfish May 6. He was using liver.

  • Ute Lake: Scott Campbell of Hereford, Texas, caught and released a 4.12-pound largemouth bass May 7.

The following report came in late but we felt it was definitely worth mentioning:

  • Lake Maloya: Linda Bouchard of Amarillo, Texas, caught a 26.5-inch, 5.75-pound rainbow trout April 28. She was using a Joe’s flies, super striker, elite spinner.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and spinners for limits of rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was light.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near below Eagle Nest on Monday was 1 cfs. Trout fishing about midway through the canyon was very good using worms, salmon eggs, Cimarron specials, copper John Barrs and red San Juan worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was very good using salmon eggs, Gulp eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Conchas Lake:  Fishing was good using crank baits, tubes, creature baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and minnows for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits and sassy shad for white bass. Fishing was fair using shrimp, liver and stink bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using minnows, curly tail grubs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair using minnows for crappie. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 50s.

Cowles Ponds: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Coyote Creek: Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, hare’s ear nymphs and copper John Barrs for trout.

Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: The courtesy docks are partially installed but fully usable.

Fishing from the bank and from boats was good using rainbow and salmon peach PowerBait, salmon eggs and Arnie’s lures for rainbow trout and kokanee. Angelico Chavez caught a 16-inch northern pike May 7. He was using a silver, blue and pink #5 Mepps spinner. We had no reports on other species.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Fishing was good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout. The annual Sugarite Canyon State Park Fishing Derby will be held May 28 through noon on June 5, 2016. For more information, contact the Sugarite Canyon State Park office at (575) 445-5607.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms under a bobber and spoons for trout.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, salmon eggs, worms, homemade dough bait, Fisher Chick spinners, Panther Martin spinners and Pistol Petes for trout.

Pecos River: Stream flow on Monday was 280 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 148 cfs. Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using night crawlers.

Red River City Ponds: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Rio Costilla: Stream flow near Costilla on Monday morning was 166 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 972 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 63 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 126 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Barbara River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Fisher Chick spinners, wooly buggers, worms and PowerBait for trout. Anglers did well from boats and from the bank. We had no reports on other species.

Shuree Ponds: Opens for the season July 1.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, creature baits, grubs, and plastic worms for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using live minnows and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using minnows in about 10 to 12 feet of water for crappie. Fishing was very good using worms and small grubs for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the upper 50s.

Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows and night crawlers for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, craws, swim baits, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 1,790 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 311 cfs and 345 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was good using worms, wooly buggers, and San Juan worms. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using prince nymphs, worms and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinners, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, swim baits and senkos for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms and small grubs for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and spinners for trout.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was very good using olive wooly buggers, mayfly nymphs, Pistol Petes, small crank baits, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Heron Lake: The Sierra Vista boat ramp has opened and the La Laja boat ramp will open this week. Fishing was fair using Panther Martin spinners and pink PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, Pistol Petes and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 152 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms for trout. Fishing on the East Fork was good using worms and small dark nymphs for brown trout. Fishing on the Cebolla River was very good using worms, copper John Barrs, prince nymphs and San Juan worms for brown and rainbow trout.  We had no reports from other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was very good using worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was very good using jerk baits, swim baits, crank baits, worms, tubes, grubs and senkos for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, spinner baits, crank baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair using Rapalas, worms and PowerBait for trout. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 50s. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River: Stream flow as of Monday morning was 399 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using RS2s, red annelids, zebra midges, BWOs, Griffith’s gnats and comparaduns. There was some decent dry fly action on cloudy days. Fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, salmon eggs, small jerk baits, spoons and copper John Barrs for trout. There is a 30% chance that the flows will ramp up on May 16 and a 70% chance that it will take place starting May 23. The schedule now is for a 5 day ramp up to 5,000 cfs, remaining at that level for 31 days and then a 12 day ramp down to the base level. The final date will be decided one week before the ramp up begins.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, small spinners and small spoons for trout.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was fair to good using shrimp, homemade dough bait, liver and hot dogs for catfish.  A few trout were caught by anglers using PowerBait, mayfly nymphs and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was good using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, minnows and sassy shad for walleye and white bass. Fishing was fair to good using liver, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using minnows, sassy shad, curly tail grubs, jerk baits and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, tubes, jigs, senkos, crank baits and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using shad, shrimp, blood baits, liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using minnows, small grubs and crappie jigs for crappie and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using soft plastics for largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes for trout. Fishing was fair using shrimp, liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Stream flow as of Monday morning was 62 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, homemade dough bait and PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday morning was 1,760 cfs. Fishing below Caballo and in the Leesburg Dam area and Mesilla Valley Dam area was fair using beef liver, night crawlers, shrimp and hot dogs for catfish. A few white bass were caught by anglers fishing below Caballo and using minnows and sassy shad. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, homemade dough bait and worms for trout.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was fair using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was fair using chicken liver, blood bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing from the bank and from boats was very good using crank baits, swim baits, jerk baits, senkos, tubes, jigs, spinner baits and plastic worms for largemouth bass and white bass. We had no reports on other species.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using beef liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait and small spoons for trout. Fishing was fair using worms for largemouth bass and catfish.  We had no reports on other species.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and stink bait for catfish.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was fair using hot dogs, liver and blood baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, Panther Martins and Kastmasters for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and small spoons for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using blood baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake as of Monday morning was 58cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Zeke’s trout bait, small streamers and San Juan worms for trout. Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 16 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, creature baits, salt craws, spinner baits and tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, grubs and jig and minnows for walleye and an occasional crappie. A few catfish were caught by anglers using liver and cut bait. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, minnows, curly tail grubs and sassy shad for walleye. Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, sassy shad, worms and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using minnows for crappie. We had no reports on other species. Scott Bartsch from Portales had good fishing here last week reporting a catch of 5 white bass, 3 smallmouth bass, a walleye and a 2.5-pound largemouth bass in less than 3 hours. They were using shall running square bill crank baits.
