Raton Tiger Track team and Coach Justin Malano traveled to Tucumcari on April 30th to compete in the District Track meet along with the home team Rattlers, Santa Rosa Lions, and Clayton Yellowjackets. There was no comparison in the number of athletes as each district team participants far outnumbered the Raton Tiger team. However small the Tiger team was they came away with some solid performances.
Participating for the boys teams were; Jose Archuleta, Dustin Segura, Rafael Maso, Adrian Hronich, Secudino, Josiah.
Girls track team were made up of Montana Martinez, Kerrigan Weese, Reigan Snow, Daisy Earle, Syriah Atencio, Taityn Valdez, and Marisol Bayless.
The Tigers girl team was led by Freshman Reigan Snow who ran her way into the State meet with a qualifying time in the 100M while finishing 4th place in the district. She also came through with a 2nd place finish in the 200M which earned her a spot at State as well.
The drama came in the 4 x 400 meter relay where Senior Daisy Earle, who just missed qualifying in the 200M, had her last and final chance to qualify for State. The relay team had used a variety of athletes to find a team that clicked and so along with Daisy she had Reigan Snow, Montana Martinez, & late comer Syriah Atencio round out the team. After a solid start by Reigan which finished the 1st lap in the lead the remaining runners held and built upon the lead to allow Daisy Earle close the final lap in spectacular fashion winning the relay in a State Qualifying time.
The boys had two athletes place in Dustin Segura (400M) & (100M) and Secudino in the shot put (6th) but failed to qualify any of them for the State meet.
Coach Malano wants to thank all those who participated because track is a sport for guts and heart and that was on full display by all his athletes this track season.
Justin Milano “Congrats to Raton High School Track Athletes Reigan Snow, Montana Martinez, Syriah Atencio, and Daisey Earle for qualifying to compete in the NM Track State Championship. Reigan took second overall in the 200m dash with a qualifying time of 27.09. Reigan also ran a qualifying time of 13.24 in the 100m dash. The girls 4×400 relay took first place at the district meet and ran a qualifying time of 4:31. Reigan, Montana, Syriah, and Daisey will compete at state in this event.”
