Raton Cheer takes 1st Place at St Pius Cheerleader Alyssa Aragon Receives Award

Raton Cheer Takes 1st Place at St. Pius Showcase.
The Raton Varsity Cheerleaders performed at the St.  Pius Spirit Showcase in Albuquerque. 
In the cheer with music category Raton Cheer placed first in medium varstiy, Tierra Encantada  placed
first in small varsity, Cobre placed first in large varsity and Las Cruces High  placed first in Co-Ed Cheer.
 
Early in the week the cheerleaders competed at the Wise Pies Arena, The Pit at the NMAA Half-time
Hoorah.  Raton Cheer performed in the category, cheer with music and placed third.  First place went to
Hobbs Co-ed Cheer, second place Lovington Cheer, fourth went to Kirtland Central Cheer and fifth place to Tierra Encantada.  Teams competed at the half-time of the state basketball tournament Tuesday through Thursday.
 
Raton Cheer competed in four different competitions, Game Day at the Ram Classic in Portales and placed first in medium varsity and Game Day at Demon Throwdown and placed first in medium varsity and received  Grand Champion Banner in Cheer.  Cheer concluded their competitions this past week in the cheer with music category at the Half Time Hoorah and the St. Pius Spirit Showcase. 
 
RHS Cheer will now be practicing for their final competition, the State Cheer Competition to be held in the Wise Pies Arena on April 1st and 2nd.  The teams that Cheer will compete against will be Pecos, Lordsburg, Estancia, and Tucumcari in 3A.  Cheer and Dance exhibition will be on Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 PM at the Raton High School Gym. 
Alyssa Aragon Receives Award.
Alyssa Aragon was honored at the half time of the 4A Varsity boys basketball championship game at the Wise Pies Arena on Saturday, March 12 in Albuquerque and received the El Richards/Frances Walsh Spirit Scholarship.

Alyssa carries a 4.21 GPA is currently ranked third in her class at Raton High school and has been a member of the honor roll since her freshman year. As a member of the FCCLA Aragon is currently the 

State President and held the position of State first Vice-President and Vice-President of Parliamentary
Procedure during the 2013-14 school year.  She has been involved in Student Senate since 2012, holding the positions of sophomore class president (2013-14) and is currently the student body 
president.  Aragon also holds the secretary position in the National Honor Society.  Since 2012. she has been a member of the Art Club and Pep Club and a member of the Tigers’ cheerleading squad.
 
Aragon is currently the team’s captain, she was named a Spirit Xpress West All-American and a UCA All-
American twice, while guiding her team to second-place finishes at the State Spirit Competition in 2013 and 2014. Other honors include the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, and the American Citizenship Award given to an active student leader who displays a positive attitude,. school citizenship and strength of character.  Throughout her high school career, Aragon’s goal has been to 
become a state champion in cheer.  She credits her time on the cheerleading squad to helping her build her strength of character, leadership, discipline and determination. Not only has Aragon been active at
her school but in her community as well, volunteering at the St. Patrick’s /St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
Fiesta Celebration, the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and cancer foundations like the Relay for Life, Color Run and the Light the Night Charity Run/Walk. Alyssa is the daughter of Nick and Carolyn Aragon.
