Raton Man Arrested in November Shooting

Raton Police arrested Andreas Vargas (18) Thursday (January 28, 2016) in connection with a shooting in the 800 block of North Second that occurred on November 3, 2015 around 11:00 p.m.

Two individuals took a shotgun and a .40 caliber handgun and shot into the house striking Michael Garcia and Miguel Rodriguez. Those individuals were transported to MCMC by private vehicle Garcia with non-life threatening injuries. Rodriguez was later transported to a Albuquerque with more serious injuries.

Vargas was a passenger in the vehicle along with three other individuals who were involved in that shooting.  According to Police Chief John Garcia, two of the four suspects are known to be out of state and the third is still at large, but believed to be in the Raton area.

Arrests warrants have been issued for the other three individuals and it is hoped that the two out of state fugitives will be in custody soon. Raton Police are also looking for the other suspect in the Raton area.

Vargas has been charged with a total of 12 charges:

Two counts of Conspiracy to shooting at an inhabited building.

One count of Conspiracy to Assault with intent to commit a violent felony (with intent to commit murder).

Two counts of Conspiracy to Aggravated Battery.

One count Conspiracy to Assault with intent to commit a violent felony (with intent to commit mayhem).

Conspiracy to tampering with evidence.

Five counts of Conspiracy to Aggravated Assault (use of a deadly weapon)
