In Loving Memory of Elsie Esquibel

Elsie M. Esquibel, age 92 of Trinidad, died August 12, 2015 at the Sangre De Christo Hospice in Pueblo.

She was born November 17, 1922 in Cedar Hill, Colorado to Jesus and Maria Lopez.

Mrs. Esquibel was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and maintained a very strong faith her entire life.  She was also a member of Sociedad de Nuestra de Guadalupe.

She attended grammar school in Ramey, Colorado.  After completing the 8th grade, she left school due to her mother’s illness and helped take care of her mother and youngersiblings.  She married Ambrose Esquibel, her late husband, on February 2, 1946 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  They celebrated 51 years of marriage before he passed away on July 11, 1997.  She gave birth to ten children and raised her niece as her eleventh child after her sister passed away.  She also helped raise several of her grandchildren over the years.  She was a loyal, dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great/great grandmother.   Her dedication and love for her family left no time for her to need or desire working outside of the home.

Mrs. Esquibel loved cooking, baking, sewing and just about any type of homemaking.  Cooking was her favorite.  She could put together a meal on the spur of the moment for as many as needed that was so delicious there were rarely leftovers.  Watching her make dozens of tortillas at a time was a daily occurrence in her home.  She attended classes in sewing and assisted the instructor with other students that were struggling.  She was an excellent seamstress and could make, alter or mend most anything that was needed for her children or grandchildren.

She enjoyed gambling trips to Las Vegas and New Mexico with her husband and children and later in life with Esther Montoya, her beloved friend and neighbor.  They would ride the bus from Trinidad to Cripple Creek on a fairly regular basis.  She was an avid Rockies fan, loved watching old Western movies, enjoyed Mexican and the old time country music.  Gene Autry was her favorite singer and actor.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ambrose, her parents Jesus and Maria Lopez, her daughter Francis Trujillo of Pierre, SD, her grandson Steven Esquibel and numerous sisters, brothers, sisters-in-law and brothers-in law.

She is survived by sons, Ambrose of Raton, NM; Richard (Gloria) of Layton, UT; Steve (Dianne) of Dillon, MT; David (Jeanine) of Trinidad, CO; John (Denise) of Englewood, CO; Vince (Lori) of Trinidad, CO;  daughters, Patricia Lederman and Pauline Wooster of Highlands Ranch, CO; Cindy (Gary) Sanchez of Castle Rock, CO; Annette (Steve) Smith ofStrasburg, CO; sister Erlinda Vasquez of Trinidad, CO; brother-in-law, Albert Esquibel of Humphrey, AK; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great/great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
