In Loving Memory of Maxine Griego

Maxine Griego, age 97, departed this life on June 18, 2015.

She was born in Girard, Kansas on May 19, 1918 to Amy and John Skibbie.

Maxine’s husband Alphonse, owned and operated Trinidad Sporting Goods Store, which began on North Commercial and relocated to the intersection of Main and Animas.

Maxine was involved as a room mother and was a huge supporter of Holy Trinity Grade School and Trinidad Catholic High Schools and a regular attendee of Holy Trinity Church.

She was best known for her sewing, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint, for which she was the Senior Grand Champion, at the Las Animas County Fair, many times over a period of many years.

She was an avid golfer and bowler.  She was employed for 6 years in the Greenthumb Program as well as “Senior of the Month” at the Senior Citizens Center.

Maxine volunteered for too many activities to name.  She spent many, many hours, visiting nursing home residents and was always there for anybody in need.

She drove people to their destinations and refused to take money for gas for a number of years.

As much as a perfectionist as she was, Maxine was an absolutely and incredible Mom to say the least.

This extraordinary woman will certainly be welcomed by many at her new destination.

Although she is no longer with us in body, her rambunctious spirit remains, along with many, many wonderful memories!

Preceding her in death are parents, husband Alphonse, sons Jack, Gene (YoYo), Joe (Prince) and six of her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by son Michael “Mickey” (Phyllis) Griego, daughter Teresa “Terri” (Austin) Ross,  daughters in law, Sherry Weaver, Bea Brown, Lynn Griego, Diana Sanchez-Hughes, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, great great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral  will be held Friday, June 26, 2015, with Rosary at Noon at the Comi Chapel followed by the Funeral Mass at  at 1PM at Holy Trinity Church.

Inurnment will follow at the Trinidad Catholic Cemetery.

The family respectfully requests the omission of flowers and donations be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 235 N. Convent, Trinidad, CO 81082.

Arrangements made under the direction of the Comi Funeral Home.
