Raton Closes Double Header with Clayton While Raton Girls loose In Three

By Marty Mayfield

KRTN Multi-Media

The boys were in town Thursday afternoon while the girls travelled to Robertson where they received a harsh reality check with 16-1 loss to the Cardinals

According to coach Tina Dorrance the girls made too many mistakes, the errors were terrible. After a long winning streak with several shutouts Dorrance noted this helped bring the girls back to reality. Raton will host Logan on Monday for a double header. As this game was not a district game the girls remain undefeated in district play with a 7-0 record and will advance to Albuquerque for state tourney play.

On the baseball field Raton took control of game one early and despite some errors handling the ball the boys took the lead and stayed in front for a five inning win. Some of the mistakes were simply mental, the kind that one might say what were you thinking as throws bobbled as well as catches on the other end. Raton also suffered from the dropsy as several balls were dropped in close situations.

The Raton bats were effective as several hits went into the outfield despite the many balls that were thrown by Carson Vandiver. Sandiver would throw balls then slip a strike across the plate that eventually the Raton batters were able to make contact with. The Clayton bats weren’t as effective but Koy Geary found a low pitch that put one over the left field fence for a single.

After a short senior player presentation game two got under way with Clayton making contact with the ball however leaving a couple of runners on base. Raton also came out connecting with the ball. It was a tie game at three going into the bottom of the second when Raton again took the ball to the outfield and pushed three players over home plate.

it was a fifth inning rally that put Raton well out in front and with two more in the bottom of the sixth Raton took the 10 point lead for the win.

The wins put Raton firmly in first place in District 5AAA and with a win in Tucumcari Raton could see a state tourney home game before moving onto Albuquerque.
