Coal Bucket Returns to Trinidad

Trinidad hosted Raton Friday night for the annual Coal Bucket game where the Miners took the bucket from Raton in a 47-0 run away game.

It only took Trinidad a minute and a half to put the first six points on the scoreboard Friday night as Antonio Rivera scampered 50 yards to pay dirt well ahead of Oscar Areolis and Jonathan Cabrieles.

A fumble on the kickoff setup another Trinidad score when Ethan Duran rambled in from six yards out untouched. Duran was then successful on the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-0 game with 7:57 on the clock.

As coach Tori Giacomo would later tell KRTN we made some mistakes that put us in the hole. Trinidad would capitalize on those mistakes and by the end of the first quarter would lead the Tigers 28-0.

In the second quarter a pass interception lead to and 11-yard run by quarterback Vince Ferraro for six. One play after the kickoff Raton fumbled setting up another Ferraro run this time from 37 yards out for six more and a 41-0 score.

The second half was on the running clock and Trinidad played several of their JV players where the Raton defense made major plays causing fumbles and other mistakes on the part of Trinidad. However there just wasn’t enough time on the clock for Raton as Jonathan Cabrieles playing quarterback launched a long pass to Martin Ortiz that went down near the twenty yard line when the clock ran out in the fourth quarter.

Coach Giacomo later told KRTN that we beat ourselves in this game. He knows the Tigers are a young team and still has a lot of work to do but he does see some promise.

Raton will host McCurdy in the home opener next Friday. The Tigers will continue to work on getting better he noted the first game nervousness wasn’t there so Raton can work on playing football.
