New Mexico State Police In Las Vegas Involved In Shooting

San Miguel County- On May 8, 2014 at about 4:30 p.m. New Mexico State Police Officers were dispatched to a residence on Castle Drive in Las Vegas to conduct a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal male identified as Arcenio Lujan, 48, of Las Vegas.

Upon arrival, Officers made contact with Mr. Lujan at his residence. Throughout the next thirty to forty five minutes, Officers observed Mr. Lujan exit and enter the residence with a long rifle numerous times. During this time, the Officers made numerous attempts to reason and plead with Mr. Lujan to cooperate with them.

Finally, Mr. Lujan exited his fenced yard area and pointed the long rifle at the Officers while aggressively approaching them. The Officers were forced to fire in defense of their lives, striking Mr. Lujan.

Mr. Lujan died at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation. The names of the Officers involved will be released at a later time. As more details become available, they will be released.
