In Memory of Pearl Sowers

(October 23, 1929 – October 25, 2013)

 

Pearl Sowers, age 84, died Friday, October 25, 2013 in Amarillo, Texas.

Family visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM Mountain Time on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Hass Funeral Home in Clayton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A. M. on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Clayton, New Mexico with Rev. Billy Rammage and Rev. Jeff Messer officiating. Burial will follow in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Home of Clayton, New Mexico.

Pearl Eileen Lawrence Sowers was born in Union County, New Mexico on October, 23, 1929 to Fred and Verda (Leighton) Lawrence. During her early years, the family moved many times, but they always moved back to Union County. Pearl married James A. Sowers (Jim) in Clayton, New Mexico on February 8, 1947. They moved to the Sowers farm and ranch and lived there for 56 years. Jim died in 2002 and she stayed on the ranch as long as her health would allow. Pearl moved to Amarillo, Texas in 2004 to be near her family and her mother. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Clayton having accepted Christ in 1944. She was a member of the Cowbelles since 1976 and was elected the New Mexico Cowbell of the year in 1997. She was a rancher’s wife who worked along side her husband for 55 years. Pearl served as a 4-H leader and fair and contest judge for many years. She worked with the Child Find Program for 11 years. She volunteered at Bivins Nursing home for the last 10 years. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Sowers, her parents Fred and Verda Lawrence, one brother, Fred Lawrence, and an infant sister, Lela Belle.

SURVIVORS:

2 DAUGHTERS: Sandra Thornton and her husband Lynn of Amarillo, Texas and Janie Phelan and her husband Troy of Shamrock, Texas.

2 SONS: Larry Sowers and his wife Daphne of Lubbock, Texas and Jimmy Sowers and his wife Addie of Hutchinson, Kansas.

8 grandchildren and 7 step grandchildren

11 great-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren

2 SISTERS: Donna Hall of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Lula Traves and her husband Bill of Clarendon, Texas and Kay Stanley and her husband Jim of Amarillo, Texas.

1 BROTHER: Dan Lawrence and his wife Gail of Lumberton, Texas.

1 SISTER-IN-LAW: Joyce Lawrence of Logan, New Mexico.

1 AUNT: Wanda Gard of Clayton, New Mexico.

1 UNCLE: Marvin Leighton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
