Fatal Accident in Trinidad: Two Killed, One Critical

FATAL ACCIDENT IN TRINIDAD: TWO KILLED, AND ONE IN CRITICAL CONDITION

On Sunday, September 29, 2013 at approximately 4:20 pm, Trinidad Police Officers were dispatched to an accident on I-25 at mile marker 13.

Upon arrival, officers located a small pick-up with heavy damage resting between the guardrail and the Van Buren Street Bridge, facing south.

A male party, later identified as Joshua young, 20, of Trinidad, had been ejected from the vehicle.  He was transported by ambulance to Mt San Rafael hospital and was later flown to Parkview Hospital in Pueblo.  He is currently in critical condition in ICU.

Two other male parties, Justin Callicutt, 20, of Colorado Springs, and a 17 year old male of Trinidad, did not survive the accident. Witnesses stated that the truck veered to the right from the left hand lane, left the pavement and continued north in the grass area between the interstate and the exit ramp.  The vehicle then struck a support post for a sign, sheering off the post, and became airborne.  The vehicle then struck the south side of the concrete bridge abutment, rotated 180 degrees and came to a rest facing south between the guardrail and the bridge.

Officers with the Colorado State Patrol Reconstruction Team assisted the Trinidad Police Officers with the investigation.  Officers determined that high speeds and reckless driving caused the accident.

The accident remains under investigation and criminal charges may apply.
